Dispensary Nurse
This role involves dispensing drugs to hospitalized patients and out-patients under the direction of the clinicians. This can involve
sourcing unusual products from within the UK and, sometimes, importing from other European countries, which can sometimes be a challenging aspect of the job. We always have to ensure that we comply with Medicines regulations. We have a very good relationship with our local community and hospital pharmacies who are able to assist with some of the more unusual requests.
We are sometimes contacted by referring veterinary surgeons asking for advice about sourcing drugs, including advice on filling out the forms required to import drugs. It is beneficial both internally and externally for there to be a single point of contact for vets requiring information on availability and sourcing of products.
Running the dispensary involves maintaining stock levels, stock rotation and administrative tasks such as logging batch numbers (of drugs supplied to and by the practice) and recording off-license drug use.
